Transcription – There are Different Styles
Posted on February 22nd 2011 by fingertipstranscriptionuk

People sometimes assume that transcription needs to be ‘verbatim’
However, a verbatim transcription can include information you may not need, and costs more than some other transcription types.

This article explains the main styles to help you decide which transcription type you need.

A verbatim transcription actually includes every repeated word, every ‘um’ and ‘erm’, all those ‘filler’ phrases like ‘you know’ and ‘know what I mean’ that may be repeated a hundred times in one interview or meeting, and can also include pauses, coughs, throat clearing etc. if required.

Needless to say, this takes longer.

If the transcriptionist can filter out all this stuff the transcript will be completed more quickly and cost effectively. ‘Intelligent Verbatim’ cuts out all these fillers but leaves the rest exactly as it’s spoken.

Then there is ‘Edited’, this corrects the grammar and any mispronounced words as well as knocking out all the fillers.

Different transcriptionists Services work this differently, so always ask when contacting for a quote.

I was lucky enough to transcribe an interview with Sandra Oh, who is most famous for her role as Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy - a bonus it being one of my favourite shows!   We all have stereotypical images of actors and actresses, but it was lovely to listen to her talk about her life, and her work and to hear that she has all the little fears we do about things such as new jobs and new experiences.  She was so very down to earth, and grounded, A most enjoyable interview to listen to and transcribe, and to realise that those girls in the glossy pictures in magazines, and up on screen can be just as insecure and 'normal' as we are!

My Favourite Fingertips Transcription Services Project

I think my most favourite work I did for you was last April when I did some police interviews which included one interview with a mother and two separate interviews with each of her daughters and it was regarding the mother who allegedly beat a young woman up outside a bar, but each of the interviews were different, so there was very obviously a lot of lying going on between the mother and daughters because each of their tales were so different, but anyway I was very engrossed with the tale but unfortunately I never knew what the outcome was and who was found guilty of the offence.

And then this week I did a fairly interesting one that was an interview with two men involved in the making of the film Game of Thrones, which I had never heard of, but I had to Google to find out the character's namers and then got so interested that I actually watched a clip on You Tube.

A transcription I found particularly interesting was an interview with a married couple who have Asperger’s Syndrome. This was an interview for the health pages of a national newspaper. The couple are prominent key figures in certain communities, well known for many reasons, particularly the husband’s role as President of sporting societies, both nationally and internationally. Husband and wife spoke frankly and eloquently, sometimes movingly, about living and working with their condition, from their diagnosis to their work in helping children and their families to understand and live with the condition.

My Favourite Fingertips Transcription Services Project

Having transcribed an interview with the actor, Sean Bean, it was fascinating to gain an insight into the life of this Hollywood star and heartening to learn of his appreciation of his roots. His childhood dream of becoming a footballer was shattered through an accident and this led him to the path of wanting to become an actor. This was a goal he stuck to despite any setback until he reached the stardom he now enjoys. He is an inspiration to younger actors struggling on the path to success, in that he never gave up hope and took any role in his determination to pursue this end and this ambition comes across in the interview.
It is always more enjoyable to transcribe a voice, which you recognise and to which you can picture a face, the more so when the subject matter conveys such interest.

How delighted was I to sit down, put my headphones on and tune in to an interview with the Producer of the Archers!  They were having a discussion about the forthcoming 60th Anniversary Edition which was to be aired the next Sunday.   It was highly entertaining to hear the interviewer try to coax more information out the producer than she was willing to provide - and certainly made me tune in to find out what was happening!"

"Not being totally 'with it' and 'down with the music' I was confused at first by the conversation I was hearing.   Gradually I figured out that I was listening to Ian Brown of the Stone Roses, interviewing Jay-z, husband of Beyonce.  It was very funny listening to Ian Brown worshiping Jay-z who, listening to him, didn't have a clue who Ian was, perhaps not even the fact he was in a band

A transcription which was interesting and particularly entertaining was with a female ‘alternative’ ventriloquist/comedienne.  This lady is the daughter of a famous actor and is well known on the fringe circuit for her hilarious and sometimes outrageously rude act.  She described how she began her career as a comedienne but, through accident or design, was introduced to ventriloquism by a famous ventriloquist who became her mentor.  She spoke about her relationships with the dummies, or ‘vents’ as they are known professionally, her act, her inner demons and how they sometimes escape into the characters’ personas during her act.  It was a fast and entertaining comedic interview.

My Favourite Fingertips Transcription Services Project.

Last month, I did a few interesting transcriptions about domestic violence and abuse directed towards men with women as the perpetrators. It was interesting to hear the viewpoints on the whole topic from a man’s perspective and learn about how the whole thing is perceived in society.

What was amazing was considering the way some of these men were treated, most of them actually perceived their wife to be in many ways the victim; in need of help with the problems underlying their behaviour – pretty different to the ideas society has about males who perpetrate domestic violence! The cases I transcribed had gone to the Family Courts and the whole process was described by the men as favouring the woman’s perspective. One victim actually had a recording of his wife physically attacking his daughter and she still was granted custody of the children!

Gosh! It would be really exciting to be able to hear out and transcribe the other side of these stories and what these ladies have to say for themselves!

My Favourite Fingertips Transcription Services Project.

Recently did a transcription of an interview with Samantha Womack (Ronnie Mitchell in Eastenders) about a project that she was doing for Comic Relief which involved travelling out to Kabira and living amongst the slums for a week.  She went out with a group of other celebrities and they had to live in shacks and eat, sleep and do the work of the people who live out there.

All of her personal possessions were taken off of her, ie. sun cream, toothbrushes etc.  She also worked in a hospital as a cleaner out there and had to witness a mother losing her baby right in front of her and then having to leave the baby at the hospital as she couldn’t afford to bury her.

Very interesting article.

Introduction to Fingertips Transcription Services
Posted on January 25, 2011 by fingertipstranscriptionuk

The Director of Fingertips, Cathy Bennett, set up the business in 2004 and it has grown considerably since then.

Cathy used to work in London for a firm of surveyors.  In those days the surveyors dictated onto mini cassettes and we transcribed them with our mini cassette transcription machines.  There were only 3 secretaries in the office and sometimes we found ourselves with a typing overload.  We used an outsourcing company who typed up our tapes.  We would telephone the company and inform them we were sending them some work, we put the tapes in a special machine and pressed play, the outsourcing company would then record the tapes their end with another machine.  These machines are now obsolete, mainly due to the fact that the majority of dictation is produced digitally these days.  The typists transcribed the dictations and emailed the documents back.

A few years later Catherine set up her own outsourcing company.  Things have changed dramatically since the days when we sent the tapes to the outsourcing company!  Thanks to the internet digital files can be uploaded onto a server in no time at all, typed up and sent back.  Digital files are also much clearer than tapes.  Outsourcing is so efficient because it saves you time and money which is vital for your business.

Fingertips Typing Services, based in the UK, provides professional transcription services for a wide range of companies and individuals. A large bulk of our work is market research interviews but we also provide legal, medical, property and all other industry work!  We match a client with a secretary who has experience within that client’s industry. We aim for this secretary to work for the same client each time to maintain consistency, accuracy and efficiency.  Outsourcing typing services such as legal transcription and medical transcription saves you huge costs and our secretaries are experienced transcriptionists with a solid secretarial background.
